The Subclass 491 visa lets you live, work, and study in regional Australia for up to 5 years. Regional areas include many parts of Australia that are outside of big cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The goal is to encourage people to move to these areas where there might be more job opportunities but fewer people living there.
To apply for this visa, you need to be nominated by an Australian state or territory government or be sponsored by an eligible family member living in a regional area.
Skills: You must have skills in a job that’s in demand in Australia. There’s a list of jobs called the skilled occupation list. Your job needs to be on this list.
Points: Australia uses a points system to decide who can get the visa. You get points for things like your age, English skills, work experience, and education. You need at least 65 points to be eligible.
Invitation to Apply: You must first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through a system called Skill Select. If you meet the requirements you might be invited to apply for the visa.
Live and Work: You can live in regional Australia for up to 5 years. During this time you can work in your profession or any other job.
Travel: You can travel in and out of Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
Pathway to Permanent Residency: After 3 years of holding this visa and meeting certain income and residency requirements, you can apply for a permanent visa, called the Subclass 191 visa.
