What is the UK – India Young Professional Scheme Visa?
As per the recent G20 Summit, The UK and India have announced the Young Professionals Scheme. This young professionals scheme will allow young citizens of India aged between 18-30 years old to move to The UK to live and work for up to 2 years. This Scheme is especially for young Indian professionals who fulfill the requirements and are looking to gain some international exposure based on their education and work experience. A young Indian can get a lot of benefits if gets the young professional scheme visa as the person will have the opportunity to study, work or even do business in the UK. It is one of the greatest opportunities for Young Indian nationals ( aged between 18-30 ) to live, study, work, or even do business in UK.
This Young Professional Scheme is a bit similar to the youth mobility scheme. Unlike the youth mobility scheme which has no education qualification requirement, this young professional scheme visa has one of the major requirements for the applicant to hold at least a bachelor’s degree which is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree. To be selected for the young professional Scheme first you need to be eligible for the visa, To be eligible you must be a:
- Indian Citizen
- Between 18- 30 years old
- Have the required education qualification, at least a bachelor’s degree having UK’s equivalency and it must be a regulated qualifications framework level 6,7 and 8.
- Have savings of 2530 Pounds
- You should not have children under 18 who are living with you or whose financial responsibility is on you.
- Single applicants and couples can also apply but for couples, separate applications have to be submitted.
What Documents you will be needing to apply for India Young Professional Scheme Visa?
You must have a valid passport or other identity-related documents that prove your nationality, as you must be an Indian Citizen to apply for this young professional scheme visa.
You need to provide evidence that you have 2530 Pounds ( INR 250000 Approx) in your personal bank account.
Provide evidence of your qualifications. You must hold at least a bachelor’s degree which is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s.
A test for tuberculosis if you are an Indian Citizen. A chest x-ray is provided if you go through a Tuberculosis test. If your test is negative then you will be given a certificate with a validity of 6 months from the date of the x-ray. The certificate has to be included in your application for this UK visa.
You are exempted from the Tuberculosis test if you are:
Diplomat accredited to UK
Returning to the UK as a resident and was not away from UK for more than 2 years
Have lived in a country where Tuberculosis screening is not mandatory by the UK
You also need to have a police clearance certificate. If you are an Indian citizen then you have to either get a local police report or police clearance certificate.
What other documents you might need?
If the documents that you are providing are not in English or Welsh language then you have to provide a certified translation. The documents must be certified by a professional person for example a solicitor. The documents that can be certified include:
- letters from a government department
- Passports, and photocard driving licenses
- Electricity, gas, or council tax bills
- Letters from doctors or hospitals
How can you certify a document?
You have to take the photocopied document and the original one to the concerned person and have them verified in the following ways:
- Writing on the document that the document is a true copy of the original as seen by the person
- Signing and dating it
- Printing the name under the signature
You may need to give additional documents depending on your situation. The department of a home office will be informing you in case any more evidence needs to be given.

Scope of Study in UK
If you are a young professional and want to pursue a course of study then you can apply for the young professional Sceheme visa and Can opt for a course of study but only for some courses and for that you will be needing an academic technology approval scheme certificate ( ATAS ). Young professional Indians can also be self-employed while staying in The UK on a young professional scheme visa and Can do business as well. The business should be on a small scale and a limited number of employees can be hired along with a rented premise.
Are there any Restrictions on Young Professional Scheme Visa?
There are certain restrictions on the young professional scheme visa and they are:
- One cannot extend this visa after 2 years. If one wishes to stay in the UK then one needs to apply for a different valid visa.
- Cannot bring family members or relatives on a dependant visa.
- One cannot apply for benefits and one cannot work as a professional sportsperson.
How long you can stay in the UK on a Young professional Scheme Visa?
You can only live and work in the UK for 2 years or 24 months on a Young Professional Scheme visa and enter or leave The UK anytime you wish during your stay.
India Young Professionals Scheme visa: ballot system
The cost of application fee will be 259 Pounds and you have to pay the healthcare surcharge of 940 Pounds. There are in total of 2400 visas available for the February Ballot. In case you are not selected for this ballot then you can apply for the next one which will probably be in July 2023.
The ballot system will open at 2:30 PM IST, on 28th February 2023, and will close at 2:30 PM IST, on 2nd March 2023.
You must enter the ballot through an online portal and need to provide the following information:
- Name and Date of birth
- Passport details along with a scanned copy of your passport
- Phone number and Email Address
The selection will be done randomly and the results will be declared via email within 2 weeks from the closing date of the ballot. In case you get selected then you will be given 30 days from the date of email to submit all your documents along with the payment of the application fee and the immigration health surcharge. There are 2 ways to pay for the Immigration health surcharge or IHS, If you are applying online then you either have to pay for the surcharge during your application submission or when you will be booking an appointment. If you are applying offline or by post then the surcharge has to be paid before sending the application.
When can a person start using the National Health Services ( NHS )?
To use the services of NHS, you have to pay the health surcharge or be exempt from paying it and your immigration application or your visa must be granted. There are certain services that you will be required to pay for like dental treatment, prescriptions, eye tests, and assisted conceptions.
Once you are in the UK and you wish to access healthcare you have to provide your BRP ( Biometric residence permit ) if you have one or give proof of your status online in case you have a digital immigration status.
