How to Move to the UK from Australia

How to Move to UK from Australia

There are a lot of Visa routes you can use to move to UK. Such as Youth Mobility Scheme Visa, Skilled Worker Visa, Student Visa, Family Visa. Usually people look for career growth, family reunion, new lifestyle or fresh starts. As every Aussie talks about, moving to the UK from Australia is one of the most life-changing decisions you can make.

As an Australian, you are actually in a very privileged position compared to most nationalities. Multiple visa routes are open to you, approval rates are high, and you do not need to sit English language tests or translate your documents. The main barriers are cost and good old-fashioned planning.

The process is quite structured, but it is not always simple if you do not understand visa rules.

How to Move to UK from Australia

Main Visa Options to Move to the UK

This is the most important decision you will make. Getting this wrong wastes time and money.

  1. Youth Mobility Scheme Visa: This is the visa most Australians go for first. Think of it as a working holiday visa but better.  Your age must be between 18 to 35 and you can stay up to 3 years in UK. You can work almost any job, study part-time and even start a small business.

    What it costs:

    • Application fee: £298
    • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £776 per year (so £1,552 for 2 years or £2,328 for 3 years)
    • Total approximate cost: around £1,850 to £2,626 depending on your chosen length
  2. Skilled Worker Visa: This is the long-term route for Australians who already have a job offer from a UK employer. Anyone with a confirmed job offer from a UK employer who holds a sponsor licence. There is no age limit. To Apply you need a job offer in an eligible occupation that meets the salary threshold (currently at least £38,700 per year for most roles).
You can live and work in the UK and after 5 years you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) which is essentially permanent residency.
  3. Ancestry Visa: This is the visa Australians overlook most often but it is genuinely one of the best. You can live and work 5 years in the UK with no employer sponsorship needed. After 5 years you can apply for ILR. Unlike the Youth Mobility Visa there is no age limit and you do not need a job offer. If you qualify you should seriously consider this route.
    Cost:
Around £637 in fees plus £5,175 in IHS (£1,035 per year for 5 years). Yes it is expensive upfront but it buys you 5 years of freedom.
  4. Student Visa: For Australians who want to study at a UK university or college. You need an offer from a UK institution and proof you can support yourself financially. You get permission to stay for the duration of your course plus an extra period. You can work up to 20 hours per week during term time.
If you are married to or in a civil partnership with a UK citizen or someone with settled status in the UK you can apply to join them.

Cost of Living in the UK

The UK is expensive but the gap with Australian cities is smaller than most people expect.

London: Rent for a one bedroom apartment runs from £1,500 to £2,500 per month in zones 1 and 2. Most Australians flatshare well into their 30s in London. It is completely normal and you will not be judged for it.

Outside London: Cities like Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and Birmingham are significantly more affordable. Rent for a one bedroom can be as low as £700 to £1,000 per month. The job markets in these cities have also improved dramatically in recent years.

Monthly living costs (approximate):

  • Groceries: £200 to £350 per person
  • Utilities: £150 to £200 per month
  • Transport pass (London): £150 to £200 per month
  • Transport (other cities): £60 to £100 per month

Find a Job

Many Australians start their job search before they leave. The good news is that job searching in the UK works very similarly to Australia.

Popular UK job sites:

  • Reed.co.uk
  • Totaljobs.com
  • LinkedIn (exactly the same as Australia)
  • CWJobs for tech roles
  • NHS Jobs for healthcare

If you are in healthcare, finance, engineering, tech or education you are in a strong position. These sectors have consistent demand across the UK.

One thing to know: UK employers often move slowly compared to Australian ones. A job process that takes two weeks in Sydney might take six weeks in London. Budget for this in your timeline.

For those arriving on a Youth Mobility Visa without a job lined up there are also companies that pre-arrange work and accommodation packages specifically for Australian working holiday makers. These can be a good bridge while you find your feet.

The Path to Permanent Residency

If you want to stay in the UK long-term here is how it typically works.

After 5 continuous years of living in the UK on most visa types you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). ILR is essentially permanent residency. You are no longer tied to a specific visa and can live and work freely.

After holding ILR for 12 months (and having lived in the UK for at least 5 years total) you can apply for British citizenship.

Both Australia and the UK allow dual citizenship so you do not need to give up your Australian passport. Most Australians who take UK citizenship keep both.

The Youth Mobility Visa is not a direct path to ILR on its own. Most Australians who want to stay permanently use the Youth Mobility Scheme as an entry point and then switch to a Skilled Worker visa or Ancestry visa once they have found a job or confirmed family eligibility.

FAQs

No. Australians need a visa for stays longer than 6 months. For short tourism visits you now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) instead.

Standard processing is typically a few weeks once your biometrics are submitted. Priority processing (extra £500) gets you a decision within 5 working days.

No. Your partner cannot enter the UK as your dependent on this visa. They would need their own qualifying visa.

Yes. There are no restrictions on Australians buying property in the UK. However most new arrivals rent first while they understand the market.

Medicare coverage does not follow you overseas. Once you are a UK resident your healthcare is covered by the NHS (after paying the IHS). If you return to Australia your Medicare eligibility resumes.
